What is a free PDF AI tool, and what should you expect from one?
A free PDF AI tool lets you upload any PDF and get answers, summaries, or explanations from the document without paying a subscription. You type a question in plain English, and the AI reads the file for you. AskYourPDF is the free PDF AI tool used by more than five million people to chat with PDFs, generate summaries, and pull insights from documents at no cost.
Most free AI PDF tools online cap your usage so heavily that you cannot do real work with them. A five-message limit, a twenty-page cap, a hidden card requirement. Ours is different. Our free plan gives you the full chat experience with citations, OCR for scanned PDFs, translation into more than 95 languages, and read-aloud audio. The free tier is the real product, not a teaser.
If you are a student reading a textbook tonight, a job seeker reading an offer letter you want to understand, a freelancer reading a contract you did not write, or a curious reader who wants to talk to any book, this page is for you. We built our free tier so you can use it as your main reader, not just to sample the paid version.
How it works
Three steps. The third one is the only one that takes any thinking on your part.
Open the free PDF AI
Drag a PDF, DOCX, EPUB, PPTX, RTF, TXT, or CSV file into our reader, or paste a link. We support documents up to 6,000 pages or 150 MB. Scanned PDFs are processed with built-in OCR.
Ask any question for free
Type the way you would ask a friend who has read your document. We support questions in 95+ languages, follow-ups, and summaries of any length. Every prompt is free on the free plan.
Get a cited answer in seconds
We return your answer with a citation back to the exact paragraph. Click the citation to verify. No hallucinations, no guessing, no surprise paywall after the first message.
“Summarize this textbook chapter in five bullets I can review before class.”
The chapter argues that economic growth is constrained by institutional quality more than resource endowment. Five takeaways with page citations are in the side panel.
What you can do
Each row below is a job you can do with AskYourPDF, named by the outcome.
Chat with any PDF for free
You get the full conversational experience on the free plan. Ask, follow up, refine, ask again. No five-message limit. No "upgrade to continue" walls mid-conversation.

Get a paragraph, page, or chapter summary on the free plan. Our free PDF summarizer is the same one our paying users get, just rate-limited to one document per day.
Citations on every answer, free
Every reply links back to the exact page in your file. You can verify our work in one click. Citations are not a paid feature here.
OCR for scanned PDFs, free
Photographed contracts, scanned books, image-only PDFs. We process all of them automatically on the free plan, no extra steps and no premium tier required.
Translation in 95+ languages, free
Ask in your language and get answers in your language. Translate a page into another language on demand. Free on every plan, including ours.
Read aloud and podcast conversion, free
Turn any document into natural-sounding audio. Useful for commutes, walks, or anyone who prefers listening to reading. Included free.

Use us on the web, iOS, Android, in Chrome, and inside Zotero. The same chat follows you across all of them, on the free plan.
Your data stays yours
We never sell your data and never train external AI models on your files. Free does not mean we profit from you. Our money comes from people who choose to upgrade.
